In a rare instance, today I’m just going to ramble my thoughts. There really is no rhyme or reason to this post, but I had to get it out. Feel free to share your responses too!
I’ve recently come to the conclusion that my dream of making Gaming Historian full time CANNOT come true until I quit my job. It’s just the reality of the situation. I work full time (40-50 hours a week) at a very brain-intensive job (meaning, I use my noggin’ a lot!). Add on about 1.25 hour commute every day and by the time I get home, I’m all about relaxing to prepare myself for the next work day. Recently i’ve taken to strategy games to relax and wind down. Any time I spend on videos is on the weekend. It just isn’t sustainable this way, especially when people crave more videos (hey, I do too!).
Then there is the thought of “is all of this worth it?” Here is an example. I spent at least 40+ hours making the Virtual Boy video (research, writing, filming, editing). My total takeaway? Maybe $20. That’s working for $.50 an hour. YIKES! I understand it is a passion project and I enjoy making the videos, but the bigger your videos get and the longer you keep making them, these things do factor in.
Obviously I would have to increase my income on videos if I were to switch to making these full time, but ad revenue is not sustainable and I hate ads as much as everyone. I would LOVE to turn them off one day. I was considering a Patreon campaign, but still need to do more research on it.
Anyway, that is my rant. Currently my video schedule is “work on it when you can.”, which equates to not very many videos. I really want to make more, but it is going to take some help.
